Gunther accuses Cody Rhodes of making his SmackDown arrival about himself ‘just like a typical American’
Gunther tells Cody Rhodes to stay professional ahead of title match
During the 15 May 2026 edition of Friday Night SmackDown in Columbia, South Carolina, Gunther confronted Cody Rhodes after a contract signing for a championship match at Clash in Italy broke down. Rhodes had arrived with tables and chairs already set in the ring, prompting Gunther to accuse him of turning the moment into a personal showcase rather than a straightforward negotiation.
Paul Heyman had arranged the title opportunity for Gunther after earlier contract talks with SmackDown stalled. Rhodes countered that Gunther had used Heyman’s influence to secure the bout and demanded he enter the ring to sign the agreement. The exchange ended without a signature when SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis intervened and removed the guaranteed title shot.
SmackDown then scheduled Gunther to face newcomer Royce Keys in the main event. Solo Sikoa accompanied Keys to ringside and attempted to sway him toward an alliance. Gunther defeated Keys after a referee distraction allowed a powerbomb for the pinfall. Rhodes attacked Gunther from behind as he celebrated the victory.
The result leaves Gunther without an automatic path to Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship. Both wrestlers are now positioned for further confrontations as the promotion builds toward Clash in Italy.
