Steelers star DK Metcalf will not face criminal charges for viral altercation with Lions fan

Prosecutors Clear Steelers WR Metcalf of Fan Altercation Charges

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office in Michigan announced Friday that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will not face criminal charges stemming from a December 21, 2025, altercation with a Detroit Lions fan at Ford Field. The office also denied a request for a warrant after reviewing video footage and interviews with the fan, security staff and witnesses. Prosecutors determined no charges were warranted following an extensive investigation.

The incident occurred during an NFL game when 45-year-old fan Ryan Kennedy, seated behind the Steelers bench, allegedly heckled Metcalf before approaching the front railing with a Metcalf jersey seeking an autograph. As Metcalf neared the stands around 5:30 p.m., a brief interaction ensued in which Metcalf grabbed Kennedy's shirt and pushed him back. Kennedy sustained no apparent injuries and sought no medical attention.

Kennedy filed a $100 million civil lawsuit naming Metcalf, the Steelers, Ford Field, Chad Johnson and Shannon Sharpe's Shay Shay Media as defendants, alleging negligence and defamation among nine counts. Kennedy's attorney, Jon Marko, described the prosecutorial decision as irrelevant to the civil case, attributing it to limited resources in a busy office prioritizing serious crimes. Metcalf's attorney, Mitch Schuster, welcomed the outcome and expressed confidence in prevailing in the civil matter, citing a counterclaim over Kennedy's conduct.

The NFL suspended Metcalf for two games over the clash, which was captured on a CBS broadcast showing him grabbing the fan. Kennedy denied making derogatory comments, telling the Detroit Free Press he had been heckling Metcalf by using his full name, DeKaylin Metcalf. The civil lawsuit proceeds despite the cleared criminal matter.
