Wembanyama goes silent after Thunder defense neutralizes him in Game 5

Victor Wembanyama declined to speak with reporters following San Antonio's 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals on May 26, 2026, in Oklahoma City. The Spurs forward shot 4-of-15 from the field, missed all five of his three-point attempts, and finished with 20 points - 12 of which came at the free-throw line - leaving his team trailing three games to two in the series.

Oklahoma City deployed a rotating wall of defenders against Wembanyama throughout the night, cycling through Isaiah Hartenstein, Chet Holmgren, Jaylin Williams, and Alex Caruso to limit his effectiveness. The strategy worked. Wembanyama ended the game at minus-8 and contributed three blocks and two steals, but could not generate the offensive rhythm that had defined his earlier performances in the series. "It's a team defense," Thunder guard Jared McCain told reporters. "We talked about it. We made adjustments to it. We know that when he gets going, their whole team gets going."

The result was a sharp contrast to Wembanyama's previous two outings, in which he scored 41 and 33 points respectively to help San Antonio win and keep the series alive. During Game 5, he attempted to spark his teammates with a speech after Oklahoma City stretched its lead to 18 points, and the Spurs did cut the deficit to eight. But San Antonio managed just two points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and could not sustain the comeback as the Thunder pushed their advantage back to 20 before closing out the victory. "He's got to take more than 15 shots, even with the free throws," Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said. "He's going to have to score more than 20 points, for sure. OKC did a good job. We've got to do a better job."

San Antonio now faces elimination. Game 6 returns to the AT&T Center in San Antonio on Thursday night, with the Spurs needing a victory to force a deciding Game 7.
