Alabama Crimson Tide guard Aden Holloway arrested on marijuana charges

Alabama Crimson Tide guard Aden Holloway was arrested on Monday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. He was booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail at 9:48 a.m. local time and released at 10:45 a.m. after posting $5,000 bond.[1][2]

According to a police complaint, authorities found about 2.1 pounds of marijuana packaged in plastic bags, prepackaged portions and vacuum-sealed bags during a search of Holloway's apartment. The search warrant cited complaints from the public and included an examination of his trash. Officers also recovered $400 from a jacket and evidence of drug transactions on his phone, including texts referencing meetings after the season.[1][2]

The complaint noted smaller denominations of cash and packaging suggestive of narcotic sales.[1] Holloway's attorney told ESPN the search was unconstitutional and vowed to challenge the evidence in court.[1][2]

Holloway, a 21-year-old junior from Atlanta, Georgia, transferred to Alabama from Auburn ahead of the 2024-25 season after averaging 9.3 points, 2.8 assists and 1.5 rebounds as a freshman with the Tigers.[3] He wears No. 2 for the Crimson Tide of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), coached by Nate Oats.[4]

The arrest came amid Alabama's run in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, where the No. 4 seed defeated No. 13 Hofstra in the first round on Friday. Holloway did not play in that game. The team was set to face No. 4 Texas Tech on Sunday for a spot in the Sweet 16.[1][2]

Prior to the tournament, Alabama had won nine of its previous 11 games, including a run to the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, where Holloway scored 18 points in an 80-79 loss to Ole Miss.[1][2]

In June 2024, the NCAA Division I Council voted to remove marijuana from its list of banned substances for championships and postseason football, though state laws still apply.[5]
